Dada Life @ The Hoxton

I haven’t taken the lens out in a while and what better way to do it than when you have access to shoot a crazy party from some fun angles.  Lots of colours, whacky scenes, and good times shooting with DJ Cal from Salacious Sound.  The crowd was BANANAS!

Photos featured on thecode.ca

Over the past few months I’ve been doing a lot of commercial photography for an exciting, new online fashion boutique called The Code.  I was really happy with the way the leading page’s photo came out as the colours had a lot of punch.  Take a look around the site, buy some accessories and check out some of my photos.

Paragliding in Maui

I’m stuck in a hotel in San Francisco trying to get home.  It’s been a long two days of travelling and looking like it’s going to be 3 days total.  Lucky enough I have a bunch of photos to go through.

Here are some shots from my 3000 foot descent from the Haleakala volcano via a tandem paragliding session in Maui.  Met a cool couple on their honeymoon from Jordan who were excited and quite scared to fly.  It’s quite a rush flying so far off the ground (for about 10 minutes), through the clouds, being held up by a kite/parachute contraption.  It’s a very free feeling…especially flying barefoot!

Maui Day #1

Great day in Kihei, Maui today.  Travelled around, cooked and ate lots of food – I made a tortilla breakfast, we ate fish tacos for lunch and I barbecued tuna steaks, prawns, with brown rice, grilled pineapple, veggies and more.  I also got to kiteboard all afternoon with a nice sunset session to end the day.

Don Valley Brickworks Canvas (SOLD)

Update: IT’S SOLD!

Here’s a chance to own some original, industrial artwork to fill-up that lonely art-deprived wall in your home.  This canvas print is 36″ x 60″ (3′ x 5′), and sits on a 1.5″ gallery wrap border.  The colours really pop and the detail on the canvas is phenomenal.  For those have you who have seen this canvas in person, you know these shots don’t do it justice at all – people always seem to gravitate towards it and spend time admiring it.

If you’re interested in purchasing or have any questions please email me at “info at davidgtran.com” for more details.

Click HERE for some additional information on the location, which has since been torn down and transformed into a green-space called the Evergreen Brickworks.

Featured in Mountain Life Magazine

A few of my shots landed in the latest fall issue of Mountain Life Magazine, featuring an interview with Canadian Pro-kiteboarder, Sam Medysky.  I also got a photo of myself in the Contributor’s section of the magazine (Credit to Daniel Steiner behind the lens).  You can read the article and latest issue HERE.

DJ CAL @ Cobra

DJ CAL played a sick set last night at Cobra and absolutely lit up the crowd.  People were going nuts to every tune he dropped.  There’s a reason why DJ CAL is one of Toronto’s hottest up and coming DJ’s who has played with some exceptional international talent.

Here’s a great bio on DJ CAL, who you’ll see in these shots.  You can also listen to his mixes HERE.

Bio: “Cal has been a music writer and DJ for over three years, and continues to be compelled by the power of a live performance to move an audience. In that short time he has written hundreds of articles and reviews of cutting edge artists, their music, and their performances. His daily exposure to and interaction with the vast world of new electronic dance music has garnered his site SalaciousSound attention from an it-list of record labels, management, and forward looking underground artists too long to print, has been cited as a source of exceptional taste by hundreds of blogs and even major publications like Rolling Stone, and was even the focus of a Toronto-produced documentary on underground electronic music.

The vast arsenal of party-rocking tunes Cal has acquired in his work as a music writer and DJ, his image as a tastemaker at the forefront of electronic music, and his tireless work in perfecting his programming and skill on the turntables have made him a performer in demand. He has opened and closed some of the best venues in Toronto, from his humble beginnings at Harmony Lounge, to The Liberty Grand, Czehoski, The Barn, Sutra, Rockwood, This is London, Level, Wrongbar, and Mod Club. He’s also been asked to play with dozens of Toronto’s finest, and some of the most recognizable artists in dance music, including: Azari & III, Calvin Harris, Charlton, Conor Cutz, Conway, Infected Mushroom, Mansion, Miami Horror, Riviera, St. Mandrew, Sydney Blu, Torro Torro, and Wolfgang Gartner.”

Modern Home in Toronto (for sale!)

My friend Marty just finished building this incredible, custom modern home.  It’s for sale.  The photos below speak for themselves about what a work of art this is.  The attention to design and detail is impeccable.  Staging provided by Modern Staging.

Airshow from a different angle

Last year I posted my photos of the Toronto airshow taken from the press area (click for Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) during some extreme weather that actually cancelled one of the days of the performance.  The only day I shot this year, they cancelled the show due to storms passing by.  I didn’t get a lot of photos of the planes, but got a few cool context-shots in the haze.
